The buzz around Tjie Tjap's expansion reached Renon, and I
had to see if the new location lived up to the hype—especially after the Uncle
Roger phenomenon at their Sunset Road spot!
Since Uncle Roger’s visit, Tjie Tjap has seen a noticeable
spike in popularity, with many people flocking to the restaurant specifically
to try the food. Social media users have also pointed out that the restaurant
had a solid reputation for great food even before Uncle Roger's appearance, but
his visit has certainly amplified its popularity. It's safe to say that his
comedic seal of approval has given Tjie Tjap a major boost!

deep appreciation for authentic Asian cuisine is clear, and it resonates
strongly with his audience. As a result, his presence at Tjie Tjap has been
interpreted as a stamp of approval, signaling the quality of the food. Social
media comments reflect this sentiment, with many users expressing excitement to
try the food that "Uncle Roger visited." A common theme in the
comments is the fact that the food is still great even without MSG—a topic

I was a little taken aback when I heard that Tjie Tjap
opened a branch in Renon. Naturally, when I visited, I was on a mission to find
Uncle Roger’s photos. But alas, no sign of him! Turns out, Uncle Roger’s
actually made his appearance at Tjie Tjap Sunset Road instead. Guess Renon got
the short end of the chopstick!
Tjie
Tjap Renon Overview
Tjie Tjap Renon, which opened in 2025, is located on Jalan
Raya Puputan Renon, a bustling area near Renon Field in Bali. It's just across
from Renon Field, and you can easily spot the Bajra Sandhi statue from the
restaurant. Tjie Tjap opens bright and early at 7:00 AM, making it the perfect
spot to grab a hearty porridge after a morning jog.
This is also viral food:
The restaurant’s atmosphere reminds me of the sleek,
minimalist eateries you’d find in Singapore. It’s dominated by a clean, white
design, and the menu is prominently displayed on a large wall. I visited during
lunch, so I ended up sitting outside, which was pretty toasty—definitely
something to consider if you're looking for a cooler spot!
One of Tjie Tjap's standout features is its
variety of noodles and porridge, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a
comforting meal. For Muslims in Denpasar who have trouble finding halaloptions, Tjie Tjap is a great option since they don't serve pork or lard. Their
menu includes a range of sweet and savory yamien (noodles), with choices of
small noodles, rubber noodles, or shirataki noodles. They also offer porridge
and Hainanese rice, allowing you to choose based on your taste preferences.
My
Impression
After browsing some reviews online, I decided to try the
complete sweet yamien, which comes with sweet noodles, shredded chicken,
meatballs, and spring onions. As a millennial who's grown up with traditional
noodle textures, I really appreciated the small noodles—they had that perfect
mouthfeel, not too chewy, but not too soft either. The seasoning was also a
pleasant surprise. It wasn’t the heavy-handed, salt-and-MSG overload you often
find at modern restaurants. Instead, the flavor was wonderfully balanced
between sweet and savory. The meatballs were another standout, with a layered
texture that came from the meat being ground just the right way—not too fine,
and without excessive flour or thickeners. It was a simple yet satisfying dish
that felt authentically made, and I loved every bite.

So, I guess ... why is Tjie Tjap Renon
"Uncle Roger-Approved" (or would be)? Well, let's start with the
noodles. Uncle Roger would be thrilled to know that the noodles at Tjie Tjap
have the perfect texture—not too soft, not too chewy, just the right
"slurpability" that would make him nod in approval. The flavor
balance is spot-on too, with each dish packing the kind of umami punch Uncle
Roger constantly raves about (without overdoing it, of course). You won’t find
any of that bland, sad noodle soup here! And don’t even get him started on the
ingredients—everything is fresh and high-quality, cooked with authentic
techniques that are so precise, even Uncle Roger’s "proper" cooking
standards would be met. If he were sitting at a table in front of a bowl of
these noodles, you’d probably hear him exclaim, “Fuiyoh, this is proper, no MSG
needed! Finally, someone who knows how to cook!" So yes, if Uncle Roger
ever stepped foot in Tjie Tjap, he’d probably give it a solid 10/10, with a
side of that signature sassy grin.
Final Thoughts

In
conclusion, Tjie Tjap Renon offers a delightful culinary experience that blends
authenticity with a modern twist. Its recent opening has garnered attention,
particularly with Uncle Roger's viral visit, which has brought attention to the
restaurant's high-quality food. The minimalist design, combined with its
strategic location near Renon Field, creates a pleasant atmosphere for enjoying
a hearty meal, whether you're stopping by after a jog or seeking a delicious
lunch. The dishes, particularly the noodles and porridge, showcase excellent
flavor balance and authentic cooking techniques, all while using fresh, quality
ingredients. With its "Uncle Roger-approved" standards—perfect noodle
texture, balanced seasoning, and well-crafted meatballs—Tjie Tjap has earned a
reputation for serving up comfort food that is both satisfying and full of
umami. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Tjie Tjap Renon is definitely worth
the visit, especially if you're craving a meal that hits all the right notes.
